7 HEROES!
By Jim ~ 28th October 2010
The results are in from the WiK Survey. The most interesting part was when they asked us about being able to fill the party with heroes (full survey results here).
Q: How would you feel about having a party that you could fill with Heroes?
Our final category proves to be another big positive—50.7% of people say that they “love it,” while 14.4% are between that and “OK,” which comes in at 23.1%. Only 5.7% “hate it like burning,” while the final 6.1% were seemingly indifferent. You can look forward to filling out your party with Heroes as another feature of the free update build that will include Embark Beach.
Now what does this mean for us? It means GW is a MMO but gives you the option to take the Multiplayer out of the equation and go it alone if that is how you prefer to play.

- The Good:
…and all kinds of it! There are numerous pros to this upcoming feature, I am excited! A number of people still do not know much about hero builds or how to set up and control them. Now, leave that for the people that do know how to do that and just enjoy yourself! One of the main reason they are implementing it was because henchmen were useless in WiK so it forced you to find at least 1 other person to team with, not a bad thing, just not everyone has the luxury to do that.Do you have a crap connection and leave your guildies high and dry at every glitch in the Matrix? Do you go afk for chunks of time numerous times in an instance? Full hero teams can help keep you from your guildies rage wrath! Just hop on vent with them and chit chat while you kill some red dots and come and go as you please.
I would much rather game with my friends then heroes but there are days when they are not around and attempting to PUG an area can leave your computer hardware in shambles from Chuck Norris punching it in a frustrated rage. Full hero teams can also extend the life of your PC equipment, & reduce PUG induced stress.
- The Bad:
As we all know, heroes can be expensive to fully equip. Depending on the class I have easily spent 10k runing up a hero and that doesn’t include weapons. Getting a hero team ready for action on every character REALLY adds up! - The Ugly:
Get ready to see threads like “GG ANet, you killed GW”, some people have always viewed heroes as game killers. You will see a surge of them after the hero update. Just remember they (heroes) will reduce stress & increase the quality of life!
And now the fun part, HERO TEAM BUILDS!!
I’ve always enjoyed making builds but now I get the option to create a build for an entire team!? BRING IT ON! One of the challenges with heroes is to figure out how good they use particular skills. A build on a real person can very easily be garbage on a hero (chalk it up to AI < Real Brains, BUT AI > PUG POWER, lol. I’m joking, I just like to poke fun at PUG’s since they are the source of so many WTF moments
). I hear people saying things like “OMG micromanaging 7 heroes will make my mind explode!” That is where “hero specific builds” need to be tested and refined.
I have a number of hero builds that work great and I want to share them with you. You can see them HERE. Also, I am making more to fill my 7 hero team. Check out the progress on that front HERE (page 2 has the builds I posted, also go HERE for a brief guide on hero micromanaging). My goal is to build a hero team build for every profession. I’m sure as I go there will be many repeat team builds but it is hard to build them all without being able to test them together. But at least you know what’s lurking in the shadows ready to pounce on the hero update.
Happy hunting all & hopefully this helps some of you casual gamers that can’t find groups for things to crank out some of that harder stuff in your own time.

I’ve been shocked and surprised in the game how often I’ve had absolutely no trouble with a hero/hench team (or even a pure hench team pre:Nightfall) on a mission or quest that we wiped on several times trying to do with a PUG.
In the end, a lot of that came down to the ease at which an h/h team can be told to all target the same individual. They might not be using the best builds or best skills, but darnit, if they’re all attacking the enemy healer together they’re probably going to win. Eventually.
I am one of those few 570+ who “hate them like burning”.
No worries, you won’t see any “GG ANet…” posts from me, since I know some people rely on them to squeeze precious game time in a busy real life schedule. I respect that.
However my excitement about this news couldn’t be less and I thank ANet for getting rid of that “hero companion” idea for GW2.
And for all the others out there: Have fun making wicked Hero Team builds!
